1. What's In The News
=======================================================
These are trying times for all of us. As we have come
out of the shock we have moved as a nation to anger and
disgust. Now comes time for action.

I have been interviewed by radio and television stations
around the world about how President Bush is handling the
situation. I have included a link for you to one of the
interviews so you can see what my comments and perceptions
are.

What has come to mind for me is what we can each learn
about leadership from this tragedy. If you are a manager,
remember that how you present your message, how you carry
yourself and the emphasis you put on words WILL affect how
people view you and how they interpret your message.

Make sure that your body language and voice tone are always
congruent with the message you are sending. As a leader your
employees will look to you to see how to interpret situations
at your company. Look at how many people were thrown when
the President first referred to the terrorists as "folks."
It was too soft of a word for a harsh situation.

The President has a tough job right now. He has to
communicate passion to us and he has to convey strength to the
terrorists. His strength has to be seen by them as intimidating
and strong as steel. Afghanistan has to be able to see that
there will be no bending, no compassion as we look at how to
execute decisions going forward.

This means that the President has to put emphasis on key
words to drive his points home. Say the following statement
out loud using a flat voice and putting in pauses where I have
them indicated --"make no mistake (pause) the United States
will (pause) hunt down and pursue (pause) those responsible
for (pause) these cowardly acts."

Now say that same statement out loud with pauses in their
new spots and emphasize the words I have in capital letters-
"Make NO mistake (pause) the United States WILL HUNT
DOWN (pause) and PURSUE those who are responsible for
these COWARDLY actions."

You can feel the difference between the two statements.
This means as leaders we have to all make sure that we
showing our employees the strength and compassion they
deserve. Some times you only get one chance to make the
impact you want. Make sure your mark is strong and deep.

Let us all join together to show our country's strength
and solidarity as we support the President at this tough time.

2. Here's This Months Outcome Focus Situation/Solution
=======================================================

How to Create More Balance in My Life

SITUATION: Dear Anne, My life feels out of whack.
I find that the more I try to get done at work, the
more behind I get at home. Right now we eat dinner
around 7 PM at night, the kids go down to bed at 10 PM
and my husband and I have no time for each other. How
I can get more balance back in my life?

OUTCOME DESIRED: You want to create a centered peacefulness
and not feel like a chicken with its head cut off.

HOW TO HANDLE: This one is not so easy. Mostly because it
has very little to do with a conversation with another
person and it has everything to do with you. Besides that,
there is not one cookie cutter approach to getting balance
back in your life. I will address the one I have found most
effective for people.
CREATE FOUR LISTS:
1. Decide what is most important to you right now. List
out those values and rank them in order of importance.
2. List out the goals you want to achieve right now. Put
	those in order of importance.
3. List out what is taking up too much of your time right
now. Be specific. Don't just write "work". Is it
	meetings? Travel? Email?
4. List what you would like to see for balance in your life.
	For example, be home at 6 PM, Family eats dinner together;
Touch a piece of paper once, etc.

COMPARE ALL LISTS:
Look at all four lists and see which areas are in conflict
with each other.

You may have that your family as high on your value list
but they aren't on your goal list at all. You have to make
sure that your goals and values are in sync or your life
will be out of whack.

Now let's say you see the problem but can't see a way out.
For example: You see that family and exercise are important
but you aren't spending any time at them. Instead you are
spending a lot of time at work. Either you have to figure
out a way to be comfortable with the amount of time you
spend at work (with the economy you may need to be working
longer hours) or you have to figure out ways you can
streamline what you are doing at work to give you more
free time.

Second, look at what things are causing stress because
they are your personal quirks and then accept them or
change them.

I really liked having the house picked up each night
before we go to bed. This meant that I was spending
a 1/2 hour each night doing all the clean up. At first
I became cranky with my family and started marching
around making everyone pick everything up. That was
no fun. So I switched to putting a small basket on
the stair for each person. At the end of the day, I
throw all of their stuff in to the basket. They have
24 hours to put their basket of stuff away or I toss it.
Funny how fast they get their stuff put away. Filling
the baskets takes me about 5 minutes.

Most of all stop and take some deep breaths. I have never
had a client say they wished they could work more but I've
had many that have been working hard so they could soon
slow down. That tells me we all want to slow down.

Give your family a hug tonight.

3. Anne's "Aha"
=======================================================

Some people are too tired to give you a smile. Give
them one of yours. No one needs a smile so much as
the one who has no more to give. Anonymous

When everything's gone wrong in a day there's nothing
like a kind word and a smile to lift the heart. Not
to solve the problem or wish it away, but just to say
"I care". Who can you share a smile with today?
